When we love something we really, truly LOVE something! And that’s exactly how we feel about our new relationship! Some things just go together. Like cookies and cream, Brandon and Brenda… The Urban List and MINI!
Our two families have collaborated to bring discerning readers and drivers a new fortnightly series – MINI Fave 5s. The must-try guide to Sydney, celebrating the launch of the new MINI 5-door hatch!
So, Urban Listers, clear the diary and get excited for our Fave 5s. There’s a whole year of eating, drinking and discovering to be done…
Now we could spend valuable word count quoting lines from the 2002 cult classic Barbershop (remember old mate, Ice Cube?!), but we won’t. Instead, we shine a light on some of our favourite barber shops in Sydney—the ones that not only offer a proper cut, but also provide shaves, a chat, and more often than not, something to drink.
So if your hair is more mop than manicured, and your beard is more beastly than babelike, you might want to book yourself into one of these Sydney barber shops, stat.
“If we can’t talk straight in a barbershop, then where can we talk straight? We can’t talk straight nowhere else. You know, this ain’t nothin’ but healthy conversation, that’s all.” – Eddie, Barbershop
Sorry, we couldn’t help ourselves.
Hawleywood’s may upset certain people with their infamous “No Females” policy, however this Barbershop provides a solace for males in need of mane maintenance. With three stores in California, and one store in Sydney, the guys at Hawleywood’s pride themselves on giving you a proper cut with “all the bells and whistles”. That means no cut lasts less than 45 minutes, and includes a hot face towel, neck shave, precision cut and style. You’ll leave feeling like the god you always thought you could be.
The Barber Shop
Fancy some booze with your beard trim? Of course you do. The gentlemen at The Barber Shop will give you a great haircut and hot towel shave while you enjoy a beer and a chat. If you feel like really treating yo’self, purchase The Chivas Ultimate for $125 which gets you a haircut, cutthroat razor shave, face scrub, cocktail aaaaand a tasting plate of Chivas whiskey. If that won’t get you to address that bird’s nest of a head of yours, we don’t know what will.
Happy Sailors Barbershop
In what is quite possibly the cutest barbershop in Sydney, Happy Sailors Barbershop is filled with all sorts of knick knackery that will keep your eyes entertained as you’re getting your hair cut by Nathan and the team. With a vintage striped barber pole out front and red and white barber chairs, it almost feels as though you’ve stepped into a barber shop of old. Sure, there are a few vintage topless girls on the wall, but don’t stare, you’ll just look creepy.
Sterling Hairdressing Parlour & Barber Shop
Now located in Chippendale, walking into Sterling is like entering an antiques store. With tonnes of rare vintage finds throughout the shop, be sure to admire the barber’s bench which dates back to the 1800s from India—it’s one of owner Tony Vacher’s pride and joys. Performing one of the best close shaves you’ll come across in Sydney and stocking some exclusive hair products to boot, your hair (and face) will be in good hands with a trip to Sterling.
The Barber Shop at spaQ
For one of the most stylish cuts in Sydney, head to The Barber Shop at spaQ. The master barbers are decked out in MJ Bale, the space has meticulous attention to detail (the tiles are antiques imported from India), and they offer Chivas Regal whiskey with your service. If you want to ball out, get in on the QT Man Package which includes two nights accommodation at QT, daily breakfast for two, an MJ Bale suit fitting, shave, spa treatment and a 200mL bottle of Chivas Regal 18-year on arrival, from $420. Go on, you deserve it.
We’re thrilled to partner with MINI to bring you our Fave 5 series—our fortnightly guide to the best of the best in Sydney. From food to fashion, Campari to Crossfit, each Fave 5 edition is researched and recommended by The Urban List, and driven by the new MINI 5-Door Hatch—putting the city at your fingertips and giving you the freedom to explore it!
